Every year, the fashion world goes through some events that remain in memory even years after. The reason refers to the event's champion who may be a legendary fashion designer, or the event
itself can be so important that it could remain etched in mind!
The countdown to 2018 has begun! So let's highlight the most prominent events that characterized the fashion industry this year. Lets go!
Urban Street wear Changing The Industry
Urban Street wear came in strong and took over the fashion industry this year being the trendiest style of the year. Not to forget, high end brands embraced it really well! We've seen an over the top collaboration between Louis Vuitton and the street wear brand, Supreme that was sold out in minutes. Balenciaga was probably the most high end brand that really took the urban streetwear style and embodied it within its designs this year, making the label the top selling brand of the year. Also, urban labels such as, Vetements, Off-white, Supreme and a lot more really rose up this year with some being the trendiest brands.
Historic 90's Supermodels Reunion
Although months have passed since Donatella Versace introduced Versace fashion show for spring and summer of 2018 during Milan Fashion Week, this show is still etched in the mind on account of Donatella’s recreation of the 1990s fashion models, Carla Bruni, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell and Helena Christensen who concluded the show, which was a tribute to the memory of Gianni Versace's death.
THE RISE OF IT MODEL, KAIA GERBER
What happened with Kaia Gerber, the daughter of Cindy Crawford, the legendary supermodel, is exactly what happened two years ago with Gigi Hadid. This year, Kaia did not skip any important fashion show to perform on its platform. The final number of Kaia's fashion shows that she walked for is 19, during one season related to 2018 spring and summer, from New York to London and Milan ending to Paris. So, Kaia was flagged up as model of the year distinctly.
Kendall Jenner, Highest Paid Model
For the first time ever in 15 years, Gisele Bundchen is no longer the highest paid model. According to Forbes, Kendall Jenner took the number one spot making $22 million in one year. This is all thanks to her deals with Estee Lauder, Adidas, La Perla, Kendall + Kylie clothing line and of course, the biggest of them all, her family's reality show, Keeping up with the Kardashians. What a year its been for Kendall!
Creative Directors leaving big labels
We've seen a lot of sudden creative directors leaving big brand names this year. Such as, Celine, Burberry, Salvatore Ferragamo and Calvin Klein. Some of which have moved to other brands and some we still don't know what other roads they're taking.
Sportswear Collaborations With Artists
Another huge trend we've seen this year was the collaboration between sportswear brands, like Nike, Adidas and Reebok with celebrities or other brand names. A year ago, if you'd ask anyone about a Chanel x Adidas collaboration, they would simply laugh at you, but this year, it became real. We've seen rappers like Kanye West, Travis Scott and Big Sean Collaborate with Adidas, and others like Drake with Nike. Not only rappers, but also other A-listers like Kylie Jenner & Rihanna with Puma, Kendall with Adidas and Victoria Beckham with Reebok & Virgil Abloh with Nike & Converse. The biggest collaboration of them all would definitely
be Chanel x Adidas x Pharrell Williams!
Departure of A Legendary Fashion Designer
Unfortunately, with great moments come the sad ones. The worst of them all is the sudden death of some iconic names. In 2017, the legendary designer with Tunisian origins Azzedine Alaïa, passed away at the age of 77. He started his designing journey in the 1980s, where he moved to Paris until his death.
Collette Says Goodbye!
This news has caused great confusion among the fashion world, as well as fashion lovers. Especially for those who are used to such boutiques in Paris, where the most exclusive designs come in limited quantities according to cooperation distinguished between the store and one of the international brands. Collette's closure announcement that came in December was a huge
shock to many, also since nothing was referring so. The reason for this is not because of a lack of deterioration in sales nor financial problems, but at the retailer's desire to retire and take time off.
International Brands Give Up New York Fashion Week
2016 approached with rekindled news of brand’s re-branding of its fashion shows, blending men's fashion shows with women's, abandoning pre-autumn fashion shows. This year, came with a surprise of another kind. This time, the New York Fashion Week, which missed a lot of brands that we are used to seeing, but we've for sure seen during London or Paris Fashion week in order to introduce new and different shows. These brands are Proenza Schouler, Altuzarra, Thom Browne, Rodarte and Monique Lhuillier, which were exhibited in Paris.
